Ross Pelton, RPh
Ross Pelton began his career in the health sciences by graduating from the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy in 1966. Ross worked as a pharmacist for a number of years before joining the Peace Corps in 1972. As a pharmacist, he is an expert on pharmaceutical drugs and their life-altering side effects. As a certified clinical nutritionist (CCN), he counsels clients on diet, nutrition and natural therapies for a wide range of health issues. As a health care professional, Ross helps clients utilize and integrate the best of both worlds to achieve a healthier, longer life.
With over 30 years of research and scientific experience, Ross Pelton has turned his passion for educating people on their health into a legacy for thousands of clients around the world. Whether its tackling tough subjects like Safe Natural Therapies for Menopause, Preventing the Side Effects of Oral Contraception, Natural Therapies for Acne or Depression, Ross covers a myriad of subjects and speaks frankly about what you need to do naturally to take charge of your life.
55 Ross’s Journey to Natural Solutions: He used to be a standard American diet kind of guy. In 1979 he stumbled upon a yoga class. Once he started doing yoga, he was surrounded with people who were into improving health. It ignited his passion. Using his background in pharmacy and medicine, he has been researching, learning, teaching and writing about health ever since.
00 Ross Pelton’s Books: He has authored more than 10 books. His first book, Mind Food and Smart Pills, was one of the first books ever written about enhancing intelligence with drugs and nutrition, and the prevention of brain aging. He wrote Alternatives in Cancer Therapy: The Complete Guide to Alternative Treatments after he had spent years as the chief administrator for an alternative cancer treatment center in Baja Mexico. Then came How to Prevent Breast Cancer, which he co-authored with his wife. He then wrote Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion Handbook, which has become a classic reference book for medical professionals. It explains which nutrients are being depleted by prescription drugs. Since the reference book would not be used by as many professionals as they would like, he and his co-author rewrote the book so it could be used by the general public. Nutritional Cost of Prescription Drugs goes into detail about the importance of nutrients, as well as health problems from nutrient depletions caused by drugs.
31 The Pill Problem: Ross wrote this book to teach women to prevent the side effects from birth control pills. Oral contraceptives are the largest class of prescribed drugs that cause the greatest depletion in nutrients. Oral contraceptives deplete vitamin B-12, folic acid, coenzyme Q10, tyrosine, selenium and magnesium, which are all required for energy production. After years on the pill, women can experience extreme low energy.
54 Nutrient Deficiency Symptoms Appear Gradually: Nutrient depletions have a gradual onset of actions. People do not connect these actions with their medications. Most drug side effects happen quickly. Ross would like to see drug companies do testing on nutrient depletions as part of the drug approval process.
09 Chemicals: There are 70,000 chemicals manufactured in the US every year. Only 1,500 have been studied for toxicity. Even with glyphosate in Roundup, it is challenging to get enough data to create a campaign against it. Chemicals are generally tested for how much it would take to kill you, not on general effects upon your body.
42 Neurological Effects of Birth Control Pills: Oral contraceptives deplete vitamin B-6, which is required for serotonin production. Women taking birth control pills also have lower levels of tyrosine, which is a precursor for dopamine and norepinephrine. Both neuropathways are interrupted or inhibited. Women on birth control pills are several times more likely to be depressed or have anxiety than women who have never taken them. The side effects from anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs are horrible. In animal studies, with human equivalent doses, these drugs cause brain damage. Forty to 60% of their serotonin receptors were destroyed. We don’t know if these receptors come back. Drug companies call this loss Downregulation. He wrote the book The Pill Problem, so women could compensate for these nutrient depletions.
02 The Hormones in Birth Control Pills: These steroidal hormones are very powerful. A woman’s body was not designed to ingest them. Ross thinks that these strong chemicals damage sensitive receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, causing a problem with the absorption of nutrients.
23 Drugs Given for Acne: Women are put on birth control pills to control acne or they are up on antibiotics. These things harm the health and the lives of women.
55 Depletion of Critical Nutrients for Cognition: Magnesium, B-12, folate, and coQ10 are all involved with energy production. The heart and the brain are the most energy-demanding organs in the body. These deficiencies negatively impact energy at the cellular level, have a negative influence on how messages are sent along the neurons. Many people who are suffering from early stages of Alzheimer’s are actually suffering from a vitamin B-12 deficiency. Sometimes a weekly intramuscular injection of vitamin B-12 can dramatically improve cognition in the elderly.
10 Preventing Accumulation and Enhancing Elimination of Toxins: The most important way to improve detoxification is by elevating levels of glutathione. Glutathione is the master antioxidant and the master detoxifier in our bodies. When you take it orally, it is broken down and destroyed by your metabolism or it is oxidized and no longer functional. There is a new strain of probiotic called lactobacillus fermentum ME-3, called ME-3 for short. It produces glutathione. In human clinical trials with ME-3, there has been a substantial reduction in oxidized LDL cholesterol, which means that you are lowering cardiovascular risk. There are also lower levels of 8 isoprostane, which is another marker of free radical damage related to unsaturated fats. There is a 49% increase in the ratio of reduced glutathione to oxidized glutathione, so you are dramatically increasing the active levels of glutathione. It causes a 26% increase in total antioxidant activity. This probiotic is a game-changer in health and medicine by being able to significantly increase glutathione levels. This means that you can detoxify heavy metals like cadmium, arsenic and mercury, as well as organophosphates, and other agricultural pesticides and insecticides.
10 Glutathione: Glutathione is required in the metabolism of alcohol. It is required for the metabolism of Tylenol or acetaminophen, which is the number one cause of liver failure. All prescription drugs and some over the counter drugs require glutathione for detoxification. If glutathione is depleted, you build up more toxins and have more free radical damage, accelerating the aging process. By taking lactobacillus fermentum ME-3, in one pill you have 6 billion bacteria that are little glutathione manufacturing plants. Strains of a particular probiotic are unique. Lactobacillus acidophilus has 128 strains. Multi-strain probiotics are found to be more effective than single strain. Probiotics in the digestive system are now known to have over 20,000 different functions.
45 LactobacillusFermentum ME-3: It was found by scientists in 1995. It was isolated from the GI tract of a healthy 1 year old child. When they tested it for antioxidant activity, it was off the charts. In 20 years of study, scientists have discovered that ME-3 boosts glutathione by 3 different mechanisms: the bacteria themselves can synthesize it, the bacteria can extract it from the surrounding environment if it is available, and the bacteria will recycle oxidized glutathione back to its active reduced form. ME-3 also produces manganese superoxide dismutase, which is also a critical intracellular antioxidant. ME-3 upregulates a group of antioxidant enzymes, which detoxify organophosphates and other agricultural pesticides. ME-3 is being called a Broad Spectrum Biological Probiotic, because if affects every cell in your body. Glutathione is produced in every cell and its job is to provide antioxidant protection for each cell. It is a critical compound for health and longevity.
02 Organophosphates: They are the most widely used pesticides and insecticides in agriculture and residentially, in lawns and gardens. It is neurotoxic. It is much more damaging for children’s developing brains and nervous systems when they are exposed. In a national nutrition survey in 2003/2004, 93% of children examined had metabolites of one or more organophosphates. These chemicals are in the food, not on the food. Eat organic foods to avoid pesticide exposure.
41 Overcoming Anxiety and Depression Naturally: Ross believes passionately that there are safe and effective natural therapies for anxiety and depression that work. As a pharmacist, he is keenly aware of the problems with prescription antidepressant and antianxiety drugs. They change the architectural structure of the brain as well as the biochemistry of the brain. These are long term problems that do not go away by stopping the drug. It is very difficult to discontinue these drugs. Once the brain and receptors sites change; you are addicted to the drug. Ross has a 4 hour online seminar which goes into great detail about the many natural therapies he recommends. He talks about serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine precursors, as well as methyl donors which are critical in the production of neurotransmitters. He talks about herbal agents that have positive effects. He talks about sugar and artificial sweeteners. There are long term studies that show that people who drink more soft drinks and consume more sugar have 3 to 4 times greater levels of depression. People on junk food diets have much higher levels of depression. Ross says that there are many effective therapies for mild to moderate depression, but not many for major depression. Exercise is an effective therapy on even major depressive disorders.
15 Healthy Aging: Maintaining muscle mass is the number one factor in healthy aging. It requires strength training in the form of weight lifting or resistance exercise to gain and maintain muscle mass, or you’ll lose it. At 72 years of age, Ross is passionately involved in CrossFit. Exercise is a Keystone Habit. Once you start exercising, you start eating healthier foods, sleeping better and hanging out with healthier people.
52 The Effects of Exercise on Mitochondria: When you do high intensity weight training, will force your muscles to build more mitochondria. When you have more mitochondria in your muscles, you have more energy available. The heart is the most energy demanding muscle in the human body. About 70% of the volume of your heart muscle is mitochondria. Exercise affects every cell in your body. It was recently discovered that when you exercise your muscles to exhaustion, your body compensates by producing a protein that brings more oxygen and more nutrients into the muscle cells to compensate for fatigue. This accelerates muscle growth.
17 High Intensity Interval Training: Doing intervals on an elliptical or bike, or doing Tabatas, 20 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest, 8 repetitions until your muscles are fatigued, brings you much greater benefit in a much shorter amount of time. You get 90% of the benefit of your exercise out of the top 10% of your physical capabilities.
41 Exercise Motivation for the Over 50 Crowd: Anyone at any age can get involved in exercise and start to push themselves. A good trainer can work with you to design a program that works for your age and level of physical fitness. Start where you are and then push yourself. Even with walking, add intervals where you are walking quickly. There are inexpensive things that you can do that will change your life.
50: 5HTP or Serotonin Precursors for People on an SSRI: There is a dangerous condition called Serotonin Syndrome which happens when serotonin levels go too high. Adding these precursors is a delicate balancing act.
52 Optimal Health and Wellness: We should optimize brain chemistry and optimize the function of our bodies. Ross says that there are a multitude of studies that show that nutrient intake in levels higher than RDA recommendations produce significant benefits. RDA recommendations have nothing to do with optimal health and wellness. You want lots of extra antioxidants on board for chemical exposures, stress or other things that will require the expenditure of great amounts of antioxidants.
12 Ross’s Morning Routine: He is an admitted mocha addict, so every morning he makes himself soy mocha. He often makes a fruit smoothie which includes freshly ground flax seed, and a scoop of good quality whey protein powder. Sometimes he makes an omelet with eggs and ground vegetables.
14 Ross’s Favorite Nutrient, Herb, Botanical or Whole Food: For years his favorite nutrient has been coenzyme Q10. He feels it is the number one agent for life extension and antiaging. It prevents free radical damage in your mitochondria. But now that he knows about lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 and its ability to create glutathione in your body, it is his new favorite. ME-3 is being marketed in 3 products by Essential Formulas called Reg’Activ. There are 3 different formulas: Detox and Liver Health, Immune and Vitality, and Cardio Wellness. All three contain lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 along with support ingredients that are condition specific.
06 One Lifestyle or Health Tip for Americans: GMO foods and glyphosate/Roundup are the most damaging things facing mankind and they should be eliminated.
