We’ve known for a while that meditation changes the brain, affecting stress perception and memory.

But what about the rest of the body? It turns out that meditation may slow down the aging process and also decrease inflammation, says a new study.

Video Review: Mindfulness Meditation Affects the immune system, Enzymes Linked to Aging

Some pretty significant findings were made in a new study titled, Mindfulness meditation and the immune system: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences.

Here are some details from this meta-analysis:

In brief, they found that meditation affects the immune system in a myriad of different ways. Meditation:

1) Reduces inflammation by decreasing the activity of the pro-inflammatory transcription factor NF-kB

2) Decreases CRP

3) Increases T-helper cell count (in HIV-positive individuals)

4) Increases telomerase, the enzyme that protects DNA and slow cellular aging
