About Dr. Ken Berry

For decades Dr. Berry recommended the American Heart Association’s high-fiber, whole-grain-rich diet to his patients, only to find his own advice was enlarging his belly and decreasing his health.

His knees ached and he was on the path to developing metabolic syndrome, the very condition this “evidence-based” diet was supposed to prevent.

Motivated to reclaim his health, two years ago Dr. Berry flipped the scripts and ate the opposite of how his medical colleagues suggested: low-carb, high fat and protein.

Happy Birthday to this good man, @kendberry.md ! He’s 50 years young yet has more energy and vitality than most 25 year olds. (His total testosterone is higher than most clients of mine that are way younger than him.) What’s his longevity secret? In a recent chat he revealed his strategy: extra large kale 🥬 salads (raw), green juices and Orange Theory fitness classes! 🤣 (Insert sarcasm emoji.) Just kidding—Ken thrives on mostly meat and fat-based diet, eats once a day, gets daily sunshine ☀️ and thrives giving back to others by way of health education. He also hinted that he’s good at “letting stuff go.” Lots of us are holding onto emotional baggage 🧳 , ruminating and harboring negative thoughts and ill-will about things that happened to us in the past. That negative way of thinking will undoubtedly decrease your quality of life and screw up your health. (@bengreenfieldfitness also hinted that his evening routine involves forgiveness and purging mental cache holding onto negative shit. At 37, Ben’s shredded, has zero wrinkles and a full head of hair. Coincidence? I think not.) Meaning, purpose and sense of accomplishment impact our overall health as much or more than what we eat, folks!! (Read Marty Seligman’s books for more on this, Learned Optimism is one of my favs.) Follow Ken if you’re not already and wish him a happy birthday! #intermittentfasting #ketodiet #ketocarnivore #meatonlydiet #longevity #antiaging #testosterone #muscle #savage #morningmotivation #beastmode #tennessee #nashville #paleo #functionalmedicine

Show Notes

04:30 Lead by quiet example.  People need to be ready for change. Address things that are important to them.

10:20 Semmelweis was a Hungarian doctor before germ theory. His efforts to get doctors to wash hands before delivering babies met with complete resistance. His career was destroyed and he died in an insane asylum from an infection.

14:55 The Semmelweis story plays out every day in medicine with different players and different topics. Helicobacter pylori cause of gastric ulcers met with such resistance that it took decades to be accepted.

18:25 Carnivore diet is the ultimate elimination diet.

20:26 Plants have a passive but effective defense which can causes inflammation.

24:28 Dr. Berry generally eats one meal a day, a big fatty meat meal. He drinks buttery salty coffee.

26:05 Dr. Berry wishes that he had been listening to his body eating the proper diet decades ago. He feels better at 50 than he did at 35.

26:47 90 to 95% of diabetes is type 2, self-inflicted by your diet.

28:17 Most of us find that our gut symptoms improve or disappear with the carnivore diet.

31:43 Your ancestry should point you to what you should eat. Everyone above a certain latitude ate fatty meat for about 11 months out of the year.

32:44 Fatty meat is vital for human development and human optimization. Some of us do better with more veg than others.

33:12 Keto and carnivore is life-changing. It wakes us up mentally and physically. Fad diets don’t change your life. We may be rediscovering the proper human diet.

36:03 Vegans and calorie-in-calorie out people push back hard against the carnivore diet.

36:26 You hack your hormones with the food you eat.

39:30 The human body is designed/wired to be happy, healthy, fit and motivated.

45:14 Risk of Alzheimer’s dementia, risk of pneumonia, risk of brittle bones/osteoporosis and cancer go up remarkably when you take proton pump inhibitors for years.

46:28 There is a hierarchy of evidence in medicine. Randomized double-blinded control trial is meaningful research. Cohort studies, observational studies and then the lowest form of evidence is expert opinion. You doctor’s medical practice can be based upon expert opinion.

47:33 Many drugs used today have unknown or little understood mechanisms of action.

50:01 Thyroid gland is poorly understood by most doctors.

51:19 Today’s thyroid conditions are an aspect of modern lifestyle and diet.

52:13 Dr. Berry recommends desiccated natural thyroid: Armour, NP, WP, Nature-Throid and ERFA (in Canada). There is also a T0, T1 and T2, as well as calcitonin in natural thyroid. Synthetic replacement is fake T4 and does not provide long term optimization.

53:06 Iodine is under addressed. There is almost no iodine in the average American diet. There are iodine receptors in the brain, in the gonads, in breast tissue and other places throughout your body.

54:22 Eating too many brassicas does not cause hypothyroidism.

55:51 Eating low carb does not exacerbate Hashimoto’s.

55:58 Taking iodine supplements does not make your hypothyroidism worse.

56:12 Excess iodine is excreted in your urine, if you have normal kidney function.

58:12 Your TSH fluctuates 3 to 4 points daily. TSH is one of the least important markers for thyroid disease, especially for thyroiditis.

01:01:38 Low testosterone is not a normal part of ageing.

01:04:58 Obesity and diabetes can be prevented easily. Stop eating the slow poison that your doctor told you to eat.

01:08:22 Diet is the only thing you should focus upon to address obesity and diabetes. Focus your time/effort/money on what will provide you with 80% of your benefits.

01:09:10 Diabetics need to get rid of all sugars of all kind, even locally sourced and organic.

01:09:24 Type 2 diabetics should have no grain in their diets.

01:09:45 Get rid of all vegetable oils. Use real fats like butter, lard, avocado and olive oil when you cook.

01:10:40 Eat meat. All powders and potions for weight loss are crap.

01:12:43 There are more people overweight and obese than are not, mainly due to processed food-like products.

01:21:13 Dr. Berry’s desert island nutrient is ribeye (meat, animals).

01:22:12 Dr. Berry’s elevator pitch: The problem is what we are eating. We need to stop eating food-like products and eating real food again. Eat the diet our ancestors ate 5,000 to 15,000 years ago.

01:26:31 The only diet that addresses hormones is the ketogenic way of eating.
