In this episode
In this episode Dr. Jeffery Morrison, author of Cleanse Your Body, Clear Your Mind, shares with us the science about how our bodies accumulate the 3 P's (plastics, pesticides and preservatives) and heavy metals; and how the ubiquitous compounds cause many health challenges.
About Dr. Morrison
Dr. Morrison attended medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, is board certified in both family medicine, integrative medicine and nutrition (CNS)
He was on the medical staff at the Atkins Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine working directly with Dr. Atkins.
Ten years ago founded The Morrison Center — a leading edge integrative medicine clinic off Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York.
02:02 Dr. Morrison’s Journey: When he was in medical school, he at tuna from the can twice a day almost every day for 3 years. He began to have symptoms of brain fog and fatigue. Later when he began to work with an environmental medicine doctor, he was tested and found that he had mercury toxicity. He has been on a mission and campaign to help other patients with unusual symptoms to find the underlying causes and correcting them.
05:30 Other Sources of Toxins: It is overwhelming to think of all the sources of exposure. Our bodies are adapting. We are exposed to chemicals in plastics, pesticides, preservatives, GMOs, the soot and heavy metals released from the burning of fossil fuels, lead in old paint, and thousands of carbon based chemicals that are being manufactured for plastics, pesticides and preservatives. These chemicals interfere with our body’s ability to detoxify and they have highly estrogenic effects. This increases the risk of estrogen related symptoms in men and women, including prostate cancer and breast cancer.
08:41 Shift in Awareness: Awareness is growing, as is acceptance, that this is part of the cause of our growing health crisis. The literature is growing, though often it will not be part of the discussion in the traditional healthcare setting. Most doctors don’t have time to spend with their patients to educate them. Current care is disease and symptom management. It is already challenging for doctors to keep up with the literature needed to keep their board certification, so there is little time for other reading.
12:12 Chronic Disease: Acute issues happen fast: gunshot wounds, colds, heart attacks, broken bones and strokes. American medicine is very good at dealing with these. Chronic conditions are mostly lifestyle related: diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Take the power back. You have the ability to live a vibrant healthy life by implementing health strategies. Often, chronic disease can be reversed through changes in diet and supplements.
15:23 Toxin Accumulation: Dr. Morrison has a symptom survey in his book that he also uses in his practice. Fatigue, difficulty concentrating, brain fog, irritability, achy muscles, painful joints, chronic digestive problems like gas and bloating, and skin conditions like rashes or itchy skin, are all signs that your body is telling you that something is wrong. Symptoms of toxicity build up slowly. Toxins can also be foods. All toxins cause inflammation in the body. Many symptoms are attributed to age, but they are from inflammation.
17:53 Toxin Inflammation Mechanisms: The estrogen related buildup and inflammation cause us to be fat and ill. Plastics, preservatives and pesticides are the chemicals in the environment that effect estrogens. There will be symptoms of estrogen dominance. For women, it will be breast swelling, breast tenderness during their cycle, or painful or heavy menstrual cycles, or being diagnosed with PCOS. These symptoms can be mitigated with detoxification and limiting exposure to the 3 Ps. Estrogenic compounds effects are seen in men as low testosterone, now in young men. Too many estrogens in the environment are blocking our estrogen production. Inflammation occurs when the body recognizes something foreign. Heavy metals and chemicals can cause inflammation. Slow exposure brings a less acute inflammatory response.
20:25 Food as a Toxin: We can easily remove inflammatory foods and replace them with healthier options. The foundation to Dr. Morrison’s detox program is establish an anti-inflammatory meal plan.
21:36 Avoiding Chemicals: We all survived before plastics were invented. We need to back to using glass and paper. Companies will make what we want to buy, so we need to buy what is non-toxic. Takeout coffee cups, even paper cups with plastic liners, and lids leach plastics. Use a thermos or use a ceramic mug. BPA is in store receipts. Wash your hands often.
26:48 Assessment: For a patient who shows signs of toxicity, blood tests will show markers. They would like to test for BPA and other chemicals, but it is not allowed in New York State. They do test for estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, and sex hormone binding globulin. They also check for heavy metals with a blood test for acute exposure, or a provoked heavy metal test. Patients are given a chelating agent and urine is collected for 6 hours. It will show what has been removed from the body. They also do lots of nutritional blood tests.
29:55 Hormone Markers: In women, we want to see estradiol and progesterone levels at a 10 to 1 ratio. This should be done within the week before the menstrual cycle. Estrogen/progesterone levels will be at their peak. Often, young women have low progesterone, negatively impacting ovulation. They also tend to have high estrogen because of the estrogenic effects of chemicals. The sex hormone binding protein test is an indirect test for estrogen levels. When SHBT is high, there is estrogen dominance.
31:13 Functional Nutrients: Supplementing with progesterone is not the remedy. The supplementation needed should be those that assist with the elimination of chemicals from the liver. MedCaps DPO is a great supplement for liver detoxification. OncoPLEX, broccoli seed extract, helps with the specific ability to rid us of bad estrogen. BIA, bioimpedance analysis, provides intracellular and extracellular water and lean body mass.
32:49 30 Day Detox: Dr. Morrison has his new patients spend their next 30 days utilizing diet modifications and nutritional supplements based upon individual symptoms. They use a daily benefit program, using a shake for breakfast, a shake and salad for lunch and protein and vegetables for dinner. They found that after 30 days, the symptom survey improved by 60%. They also lost about 9 pounds. For digestive issues, he may recommend probiotics, digestive enzymes, or a histamine enzyme to help with histamine breakdown. The goal is to improve the way the body works so it can detoxify better. Juice fasts do not provide enough protein. We need to feed the machine. The objective is to teach long term healthy life style techniques. Shop the outside edge of the grocery store.
37:48 Glutathione: Our body has the innate ability to heal and detoxify. When it is inflamed, the processes shut down, including the process of every cell in the body, especially the liver, to produce antioxidants inside the cells. These buffer toxins and remove toxins. Your body should be making glutathione in plentiful amounts. Due to environmental toxins, your body is overwhelmed and using up all of your resources. It may be appropriate to supplement with S-acetyl glutathione.
39:52 Dr. Morrison’s Favorite Nutrient: Vitamin C is his choice. He takes buffered vitamin C, with calcium, magnesium and potassium every day. Vitamin C is his favorite antioxidant.
41:33 Dr. Morrison’s Elevator Pitch: Stay out of the hospital. Do whatever it takes to stay out, implying that you work on preventative medicine. Hospitals are great for acute issues, but they are a breeding ground for bad bacteria.
